Agenda created by actual San-Antonians’ families in our communities through Small Group Conversations.

Immigration.

  1. An immediate pathway to permanent residency and/or citizenship for undocumented people without penalty;
  2. An immediate pathway to citizenship for all DACA young people;
  3. A fair and humane process for those who seek asylum in the United States;
  4. Drivers’ license for undocumented people.

Universal Background Checks for the purchase of Firearms

Infrastructure

  1. Repairing, replacing broken sidewalks and ensuring that sidewalks are ADA accessible;
  2. Proper street lighting improves neighborhood security;
  3. Speed bumps/humps: to prevent speeding on neighborhood streets;
  4. Adequate animal control: especially loose dogs that are dangerous to senior citizens and children.

Neighborhood Safety

  1. Police and sheriff’s deputies to work with local residents to identify issues that affect neighborhood safety: robberies and drugs in our neighborhoods and schools as well as addressing racial profiling.

Public Education

  1. State support of 60% of the cost of public education;
  2. After school and summer recreation programs;
  3. Cost free breakfast and lunch for all economically disadvantaged public-school children;
  4. Raising teachers’ salaries;
  5. Restructuring standardized tests to be evaluative instead of punitive.

The Cost of College Education:

  1. Increased state and federal grants for college;
  2. Tuition free community college;
  3. Forgiveness of student debt;
  4. Support for Project QUEST: long term job training for living wage jobs.

Healthcare

  1. Expand Medicaid to cover adults an immediate enrollment of all children in the state in CHIP or Medicaid for children with a minimum of red tape, including extending the re-enrollment period to 18 months. 

Gentrification and Affordable Housing:

  1. Increase the homestead exemption from $25,000 to $100,000, so people can afford to stay in their neighborhoods;
  2. Increase emergency financial assistance for home repairs;
  3. Provide for transparency in real estate transactions so that all property owners pay their fair share of taxes;
  4. Initiate action to increase affordable housing, including rent controls and expanded programs for affordable and quality housing.

Criminal Justice Reform

  1. Elimination of the “check the box” requirement for job applications

Additional Items to Mitigate COVID-19 Economic Effects

In addition, to deal with the COVID-19 crisis that will probably extend until the end of 2021. I/CAN will initiate action not only to manage relief but to organize restructuring essential elements of that restructuring will include:

At Both the Federal and the State Level.

  • A $15 minimum wage indexed to inflation; 
  • A federal family leave act that allows workers to miss work when they are ill and continue to be paid, and to take paid leave to care for a sick family member; 
  • Expanded unemployment benefits;
  • Workforce development for living wage jobs that includes a living stipend for participants while they are in the program;
  • Arrangements to cover people’s missed rent payments, mortgage payments and payments on student leans.

At the City and County Level.

  • From the $270 Million of the City of San Antonio/ Bexar County CARES fund:
    • Dedication of at least $100 million for job training through the community college that includes stipends for living expenses and 
    • An additional $30 million to the risk mitigation fund to cover rent, food, medicine, transportation and childcare.
